Diablo Trust Internship Program

Diablo Trust interns participate in a collaborative land management process that includes environmentalists, ranchers, land management professionals, community activists, scientists, college professors and students. Agency involvement includes the United States Forest Service, the Arizona Game & Fish Department, the Arizona State Land Department, and others.

Interns learns not only about the Diablo Trust but about the workings of non-profit organizations in general. The work varies from day to day, but may include:

  • Attending and taking minutes for all Diablo Trust collaborative meetings, including the Diablo Trust monthly meetings and the various Diablo Trust working group meetings
  • Office work, including:
    • Assisting with Diablo Trust mailings
    • Making copies
    • Assisting with bookkeeping
    • Answering e-mail & phone
    • Filing/Organizational work
    • Meeting Minutes
    • Post Office
  • Helping with specific Diablo Trust working group projects. For example, recent interns worked on:
    • Writing the Diablo Trust brochure
    • Producing the Diablo Trust Educational Video series
    • Watershed restoration projects/research
    • Drought Relief projects
    • Conducting grant research, and participating in writing grants for both the Diablo Trust office and some of its working group projects
    • Wind Energy Project
    • Rural Planning Area
    • RPA Retreat
  • Attending outside meetings/presentations relevant to the Diablo Trust, such as:
    • The Forest Service NEPA Workshop – Spring 2001
    • Forage Resource Study Group meetings (an ongoing monthly, or bi-monthly meeting of the US Forest Service, AZ Game & Fish Department, AZ State Land Department, and the Diablo Trust – to collaborate on the forage base for this area)
    • The Sustainable Harvests Lecture Series (September 2001 – March 2002) – produced by the NAU Center for Sustainable Environments
    • Malpai Borderlands meetings (a collaborative land management group in SE Arizona)
    • Various grant workshops
    • Other presentations, such as “Building Local, Strong Communities” – Flagstaff, Fall 2001
    • Rural Planning Area meetings with Coconino County Department of Community Planning – 2004
    • Wind Energy meetings with NAU’s Engineering Department and Southwest Wind Energy - 2004
