A Working List Diablo Trust Projects
2005
- Arizona Game & Fish Department volunteers cleared juniper trees on ~1700-1800 acres by hand
- The Winter Browse & Watershed Stabilization Project added an additional 3,776 acres to the area that has been chained (total 7,176)
- Winter browse & watershed restoration project - Wilkins Pasture, Coconino National Forest – 150 acres completed of Juniper clearing. 300 acres to go to complete NEPA
- Participation in the Anderson Mesa Pronghorn Antelope planning process
- Drought relief - Pipeline extension of about 4 miles to provide water for livestock and wildlife in areas currently poorly watered. Two other pipeline projects are awaiting approval that are to benefit antelope by providing water in poorly watered areas in the northern and western areas of the Bar T Bar winter range.
- Watershed restoration projects for the Anderson Mesa rim and immediate upland area:
- Spring rest and grassland burn projects, to enhance pronghorn fawn habitat, 1200+ acres
- Woodland/grassland restoration project on Anderson Mesa - 230 acres of summer range
- Small watershed restoration demonstration – attempt restoration of small currently dry spring and multiple seeps, on transition winter/summer range
- Continuing to restore winter wildlife browse on transition range areas
- Continuing to create wildlife pathways on transition range areas
- Grassland restoration and watershed stabilization projects - a 4000-acre project & a 1200-acre project
- Winter browse project - State Trust Land and private land - 200 acres
- Wildlife pathway creation (0.75 miles), on transition winter/summer range
2004 - 1994
- AZGF volunteers cleared juniper trees on ~700-800 acres by hand
- Winter browse & watershed stabilization project - Bar T Bar Ranch - approximately 3400 acres of winter range restored
- Winter browse & watershed stabilization project - Flying M Ranch - 3100 acres of winter range restored
- Winter browse & watershed restoration project - Wilkins Pasture, Coconino National Forest
- Grassland restoration project - Flying M Ranch - winter range
- Creation of a wildlife pathway - Flying M Ranch, on transition winter/summer range
- Erosion abatement project - Flying M - winter range
- Reconstructed approximately 3 miles of fence to antelope-friendly standards, as well as modifying and/or removing additional miles of fence
- Road restoration experiment with EcoResults! - Anderson Mesa area
- Anderson Mesa pronghorn hiding cover data collection, in conjunction with Northern Arizona University
- Production of a 3-part environmental educational video series & curriculum

- Participation in the Anderson Mesa antelope planning process

- Participation in numerous conferences, workshops, and other relevant meetings in the Western Region
- Presentation of the Diablo Trust to numerous regional groups, including presentations to: Grand Canyon Forests Festival, Coconino Community College Environmental Issues class, Arizona Council on Environmental Education, the Kiwanis club, The Ecological Society of America, the Flagstaff Leadership Program, and Northern Arizona University classes: Wildlife, Geography, and Environmental Planning
- Compilation of various GIS information data layers, to create different Diablo Trust maps
- In conjunction with the Grand Canyon Trust, submitted joint comments on the five forest Off-Highway Vehicle EIS Preliminary Proposal
- 2000 “Reflections of the Land” Art Show: Hosted an “Artist’s Day-On-The-Land” on the Diablo Trust, resulting in two-month art show exhibit
- Diablo Trust Annual Camp-Outs: Joint fence reconstruction (to antelope standards) project
- Winter Range Restoration - Joint effort with: Arizona Game & Fish, State Land Department, Arizona Antelope Foundation, Bar T Bar Ranch, Flying M Ranch
- Designed and implemented an environmental field trip curriculum focusing on rangeland health, for grades 6-11
- Anderson Mesa Summer Range Comparative grazing research project - Northern Arizona University (NAU) and Prescott College. Consists of comparing three different livestock grazing management practices on three fenced (from non-study livestock), controlled range study plots. Three additional range study plots, fenced off from livestock and wildlife, are being built for further grazing research.
- Pinyon-juniper (PJ) research, Winter Range – Northern Arizona University (PJ project #1). Consists of research on PJ age structure, regeneration, and distribution
- Pinyon-juniper (PJ) research – Northern Arizona University (PJ project #2). Consists of research on PJ regeneration, growth rate, seeding incubation, and distribution
- Prairie dog research, Anderson Mesa & winter range - Northern Arizona University
- Research on small animal use of, and seed distribution from, Pinyon tree sources and associated vegetation research - Northern Arizona University
- 1950’s – 1970’s: Grassland restoration and watershed stabilization project on Bar T Bar- approx. 60,000 acres restored
- Completed a comprehensive riparian survey of all water bodies on DT land.
