2025 Winter Appeal Letter
Dear Friend,
Winter is approaching in Northern Arizona, which means the temperatures are dropping, the sun sets early and rises late, and the cattle are moving to their winter feed. The ranches are getting ready for the cold months.
It’s been a while since I was on the ranches this time of year, and even longer since I mounted an ATV with those hard Wyoming winds whipping across the open space, freezing my fingers as I sped down the dirt roads, navigating through gusts of snow. I miss it, in that way we miss the experiences which taught us the most about ourselves and gave us new ways to view the world. But there are also times I appreciate sitting comfortably, warm by the fireplace.
Working on the Flying M Ranch all those years ago made me appreciate the community of the land, from the ranchers to the agency personnel to the recreators. It gave me first-hand knowledge of what it takes to manage a landscape, and a business that requires such a healthy and resilient land. Being on the Diablo Trust board today allows me to commit that appreciation, and the deep relationships which came from my time in Flagstaff, to a positive and productive process.
I welcome you to show your commitment to Diablo Trust and our work on the land and in the community of Northern Arizona.
Support for Diablo Trust is a commitment to our community.
We are developing a new strategic plan and will soon come to you again for your insights into our mission, vision, values, and scope of work. Nothing Diablo Trust does can be done without your ongoing support and enthusiasm, and we are thankful for your thoughts.
We have seen changes in the organization over the last year, including welcoming Jessica Archibald as our program manager. Jessica has done amazing work in and out of the office, and we look forward to her leadership for many more years. We also welcomed two new board members: Iric Burden and Arnie Schlittenhart, whom you can read about in our latest newsletter. Iric and Arnie contribute so much to the board and the Diablo Trust community; it is wonderful to have them help lead the organization.
Our relationships are going strong, with the ranches hosting both field trips and interns from Northern Arizona University. Another partnership came with this year’s annual campout, held at Ashurst Run on the Flying M Ranch in August. The event was co-hosted by the Arizona Society for Range Management (AZSRM), which brought the two groups together for a weekend of connection and education. The event had over 65 attendees!
If we haven’t seen you yet this year, we hope to see you soon!
We warmly invite you to our annual Christmas Party, on Tuesday, December 02, at the Towler/Johnson residence in Flagstaff. Please RSVP using the contact information below.
This is also Giving Tuesday, so please come celebrate both the season and our community together!
SAVE THE DATE! We are also looking forward to our 2026 Annual Meeting, on Friday, February 20.
These events and programs are only possible with your support.
