Annual Campout Under the Stars: Wild & Working Lands Workshop and Overnight
Our Annual Campout Under the Stars is one of our biggest events of the year, which brings in both the greatest audience and amount of support for our organization.
This year's Campout will be back at Ashurst Run, on the Flying M Ranch! Specifics are still being made, but for now the date is set and as always you are welcome to come join us at any time throughout the event.
The dinner on Saturday is a Tri-Tip dinner. Sunday's breakfast is usually sausage and biscuits, cooked 'cowboy style' in a dutch oven, with cowboy coffee.

Annual Campout Under the Stars
Our Annual Campout Under the Stars is one of our biggest events of the year, which brings in both the greatest audience and amount of support for our organization.
This year's Campout will be at Moqui Campground, right across the road from Hay Meadow on the Bar T Bar Ranch. On Friday, before and during the Campout, we will be doing a work project at Hay Meadow! We'll be removing fence from the area, to benefit both the ranch and the wildlife. You are encouraged to come early on Friday to help with the work project, but as always you are welcome to come join us at any time throughout the event.
The dinner on Friday is always a potluck, complete with burgers over an open fire (made from local, grassfed beef). Saturday's breakfast is usually sausage and biscuits, cooked 'cowboy style' in a dutch oven, with cowboy coffee.

Book Club: On Trails: An Exploration
A strikingly original debut from a tremendous new talent, Robert Moor explores how trails help us understand the world, from invisible ant trails to hiking paths that span continents and oceans, from migration routes to the Internet.
For seven years Moor travelled the globe, exploring trails of all kinds. He learned the tricks of master trail-builders, hunted down long-lost Cherokee trails, and traced the origins of our road networks. Moor interweaves his adventures with findings from science, history, philosophy, and nature writing in every chapter.
This deep search for meaning introduces the reader to experts who work with trails of all kinds, outrageous anecdotes from his own experiences and spectacular descriptions of landscapes and animal behaviour. On Trails gives an eye-opening tour, leaving us with a much richer, prismatic take on what we constantly take for granted: how we get where we're going.

Book Club: The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire That Saved America
WE'RE READING THIS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE MOUNTAIN & PRAIRIE PODCAST BOOK CLUB! CLICK HERE TO JOIN THEIR DISCUSSION.
On the afternoon of August 20, 1910, a battering ram of wind moved through the drought-stricken national forests of Washington, Idaho, and Montana, whipping the hundreds of small blazes burning across the forest floor into a roaring inferno that jumped from treetop to ridge as it raged, destroying towns and timber in the blink of an eye. Forest rangers had assembled nearly ten thousand men — college boys, day workers, immigrants from mining camps — to fight the fire. But no living person had seen anything like those flames, and neither the rangers nor anyone else knew how to subdue them.
Egan narrates the struggles of the overmatched rangers against the implacable fire with unstoppable dramatic force. Equally dramatic is the larger story he tells of outsized president Teddy Roosevelt and his chief forester, Gifford Pinchot. Pioneering the notion of conservation, Roosevelt and Pinchot did nothing less than create the idea of public land as our national treasure, owned by and preserved for every citizen. The robber barons fought Roosevelt and Pinchot’s rangers, but the Big Burn saved the forests even as it destroyed them: the heroism shown by the rangers turned public opinion permanently in their favor and became the creation myth that drove the Forest Service, with consequences still felt in the way our national lands are protected — or not — today.

Meat Processors Day on the Land
Come join us for our first field event of 2018: a trip to the Perkinsville Meat Processors! This will be an educational and interactive tour of a local, family-owned business that has worked closely with the Flying M Ranch and a vast number of other ranchers, farmers, and hunters throughout northern Arizona. This trip will allow us to see the inside of the plant . . . to be "in the room where it happens."
On this trip we will learn about the history of the business, the intricacies of meat processing and packing, and how closely the Ducote family works with open lands owners, managers, and users.
We will get an introduction to this industry and some of the finer points at the 2018 Annual Meeting, by Sam Garcia, Ph.D., who is the program manager of the Food Product and Safety Lab in the School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences at the University of Arizona.
No need to bring a lunch! We'll all be eating at the Casa Grande Mexican Restuarant in Chino Valley. Payment TBA.
Please bring:
- plenty of water
- snacks
- long pants
- closed-toe shoes/boots
This is primarily an indoor visit, so weather-oriented clothes aren't necessary!
